Autumn is the perfect time of year to get crafty in the kitchen and fill the home with delicious scents. And what better way to show your pooch just how much they mean to you, than with their very own homemade dog treats.

Our dog treat recipes use the iconic fruits of the season, to make the most of those tasty autumnal flavours. These dog treat recipes will be sure to leave your dog drooling and their tail wagging.

3 autumnal dog treat recipes

Pumpkin dog treats

Ingredients

  • 1 cup canned, pureed pumpkin
  • 2 cups wholemeal flour
  • 1 egg

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 175 degrees centigrade.
  • Add the pureed pumpkin and egg to a bowl, and mix together until smooth.
  • Add the flour and fold with a spoon until the mixture comes together to form a dough. This should form a drier biscuit dough. If it feels too wet, add a little more flour.
  • Roll out the dough to a ¼ inch thick, cut into your favourite doggy shapes and place on a baking tray.
  • Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. When done, flip each biscuit, reduce the heat to 150 degrees centigrade and bake for a further 30 minutes.
  • Leave on a wire rack to cool and serve.

Apple dog doughnuts

Ingredients

  • 2 cups wholemeal flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 beaten large eggs
  • 1 grated apple
  • ¾ cup juiced fresh apple

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 160 degrees centigrade.
  • Grease a doughnut pan with a little olive oil.
  • Mix the dry ingredients into a bowl: flour, baking powder and baking soda.
  • Add the oil, eggs and apple juice to the bowl. Mix until thickened.
  • Add your grated apple and stir.
  • Pour the doughnut batter into the pan and bake for around 8 minutes.
  • Leave to cool and serve.

Peanut butter and pumpkin pupcakes

Ingredients

For the cake batter

  • 1 ¾ cup of wholemeal flour
  • 2 tablespoons of smooth, natural peanut butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons organic honey
  • 1 cup canned pureed pumpkin

For the icing

  • ½ cup fat free Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon smooth natural peanut butter

 

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees centigrade.
  • Line a cupcake tin with cupcake cases.
  • Add all the ingredients into a bowl and stir until thoroughly mixed.
  • Add around one tablespoon of mixture to each cupcake case.
  • Bake for around 35-40 minutes.
  • Let your cupcakes cool completely before adding the icing.
  • Mix the yogurt and peanut butter in a bowl.
  • Add the mixture to a piping bag and pipe your desired decoration onto each cupcake.
  • Sprinkle with finely chopped carrot or pumpkin seeds, and serve.
