Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Alderley edge.jpg

This was the first long distance walk we took our dog Rhys on when he was about 6 months old.
The Edge is a sandstone ridge covered in woodland where dogs can roam off lead. Entry can be made at the bottom of the edge from Mottram St Andrews or form the top of the Edge itself where there is a carpark.
There are many footpaths to follow through the woodland areas, some fairly steep but other which are pushchair accessible.
From the top of the Edge there are panoramic view over boh Cheshire and the Peak District. The unique geology of the area has earned it a ‘Site of Special Interest’ designation by the National Trust.
Local ledgend tells the story of ‘The Wizard’, in which a local farmer comes across an old man whilst walking across the edge. The old man offers to buy the farmers horse, which he was taking to market to sell. The farmer at first refuses the offer but later accepts as his horse did not sell at the market. Upon accepting the offer the farmer is surprised when the old man opens the rock face by casting a spell to reveal a cavern inside. When the farmer enters he sees knights sleeping within the cavern which, the old man tells him, will awaken ‘should England fall into danger’. The spot is marked along the walk by The Wizards Well.
The Wizard is also the name of the pub within the village.
